JIVAMUKTI

Jivamukti means “liberation while living.”

Jivamukti is a vinyasa style practice. Each class has a theme, which is explored through yoga scripture, chanting, meditation, asana, pranayama, and music. It can be an intense and challenging Vinyasa class. Attend classes at the Jivamukti Yoga School in New York, and you may find your mat next to such Hollywood and music industry celebrities as Gywneth Paltrow, Christy Turlington, Russell Simmons, and Sting -- all devotees of this method.

SPIRITUAL WARRIOR JIVMAUKTI CLASS

This is a brisk, guided, led vinyasa class in which the teacher calls out the asanas and provides the breath count, but gives minimal instruction as to how to do the various asanas. The class offers a well-rounded practice as a set sequence that includes a warm-up, the setting of an elevated intention, chanting, surya namaskar, standing asanas, twists, balances, forward bending, backward bending and inversions, as well as relaxation and meditation, and is designed to be completed in one hour. Thus, it is suitable for those who have limited time to devote to a yoga practice, for those who are looking for a workout to "shape up" physically, and for those who are looking to include a robust asana practice in a manageable daily routine. Because it is a fixed sequence that is always the same, a student has the opportunity to progress to the level of mastery by committing to a consistent, steady, regular sadhana. The first few classes may seem overwhelming, but with time and steady practice, progress will inevitably come. The Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior 1-hour sequence is a comprehensive yoga class that transforms, invigorates and energizes, while at the same time grounding and leading the student inward on an exploration of the deeper spiritual aspects of the self.

JIVAMUKTI OPEN
 CLASS

Whether you're a beginner, deciphering the difference between a halasana (plough pose) and sirshasana (headstand) or an advanced yogi, the Open class encompasses all levels at Jivamukti. You work at your own pace, following the teacher's constant guidance. A typical Open class consists of flowing vinyasa sequences partnered with Sanskrit chanting, traditional Vedic and contemporary teachings and commentary, breath awareness, meditation, hands-on alignment, and relaxation. We do sitting, standing, and inverted postures, and suggest challenging variations for more advanced students. Exuberant, eclectic music plays an integral role; in a typical Open class you might practice to a shifting soundtrack of global trance, Bob Dylan, the chanting of Krishna Das, Miles Davis, Gregorian chants, and Dido.

BACK TO BASICS JIVAMUKTI CLASS

The back to basics class is designed as a slower flowing vinyasa open class where intention and breath link each movement in time. It's a great transition from basics to open and gives more advanced students the opportunity to refine their asana practice with a deeper exploration.

The practice of the wild consists of flowing asana sequences, hands-on adjustments, breath practices, meditation, sanskrit chanting, philosophical teachings and deep relaxation. Sitting, standing, and inverted postures are incorporated into classes. To keep the practice inspiring asana sequences are ever-changing. Music plays an integral role in the class which is all based around the oceans and the blue planet. This class will also have a projection of the blue planet to remind us of our connection to the   earth and all the sentient beings, a little bit wild and filled with humour and transformation.

OPEN REHAB RESTORE CLASS

Yoga was developed in India thousands of years ago. Hatha yoga is just one of eight limbs of yoga and is the type that is usually practiced in the North America. It includes physical postures (asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama) that promote optimal alignment and functioning of the body and mind. To assist persons with physical limitations who might have difficulty performing standard poses, Advanced certified jivamukti teacher Tina James offers an adaptive yoga class in which the standing poses are adapted for those who do not stand.  Tina’s Rehab's Adaptive Yoga Class starts with breath awareness and gentle warm-ups, includes a series of adaptive poses and ends with guided relaxation. Many adaptive yoga students have noted the following benefits after taking the class: improved posture, less back pain, increased stamina and enhanced feeling of relaxation. Those who continue yoga practice at home seem to experience even more benefits. Yoga is really about self-awareness and enhancing one's whole being — physically, mentally and spiritually.
